 Water Infrastructure Careers Week

 at Cardozo TransSTEM Academy

Environment and Education workforce consultants collaborated with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and DC Water to arrange and run a five-day “Water Week” (July 15-19, 2019) program at Cardozo Education Campus in Washington, DC.  Water Week was part of an innovative, six week, pilot Summer Infrastructure Careers program organized by "Introducing Young Americans to Infrastructure" (IYAI+).

This uniquely crafted Summer Pilot (paid internship) Program introduced participants to infrastructure careers across critical lifeline sectors:

  • Transportation

  • Water and Wastewater Systems

  • Power and Energy

  • Telecommunications and IT 

  • Advanced Manufacturing, and Cyber


Through field experiences and interactions with practicing professionals, Water Week provided the cohort of 20 Cardozo TransSTEM rising juniors and seniors insights into their "Beloved Community’s" water supply, stormwater and wastewater systems and related infrastructure career pathways.

Water Week included two days of field visits:

  • Howard University

  • Covanta Energy Alexandria

  • Alexandria Renew Environmental Center

  • DC Water's  Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment facility

  • DC Water Headquarters

  • Four-Mile Run Green Infrastructure


The program also offered three days of career pathway talks and"speed mentoring" sessions with practicing environmental and infrastructure operations professionals from:

  • Congressional Black Caucus Foundation

  • Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes NortonDC Water

  • International City/County Mgmt. Assoc.

  • Squire, Patton, Boggs law firm.

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

  • University of the District of Columbia

  • Water Environment Federatiom
